Jonain päivänä tää varmasti palkitaan
vain hullut heräävät näin aikaisin minä vaan poistun rappukäytävään töissähän on käytävä |
One day this will surely be rewarded
only crazy people wake up this early I just leave for the stairwell one has to go to work after all |
|
kun Pilttiä ei tullut kultalusikkaan
niin sanokaa vaan jos voin jotenkin auttaa puen uniformuni ja pidän unirytmini |
when Piltti wasn't put into a golden spoon
just say the word if there's anything I can do to help I'll put on my uniform and stick to my sleep schedule |
|
kyllä perintöhopeilla kelpaa leikata
kun asumistuki kattoa ei kata |
it's certainly fine to cut with family silver
when the housing benefit doesn't cover the roof |
|
elämä liukuu hihnalla
Valintatalon kassalla vuodet haihtuu savuna ilmaan tehtaan piipuista kerään tuopit salista ja katson kauas tauolla pilviä pihan röökipaikalla varjoja paratiisissa pilviä pihan röökipaikalla varjoja paratiisissa |
life slides along like a conveyor belt
at the checkout counter of Valintatalo the years vanish like smoke rising from the factory chimneys I collect the pints from the hall and I look far away during a break clouds in the courtyard’s smoking area clouds in the courtyard’s smoking area shadows in paradise |
|
täysipäiväisesti osa-aikainen
älä kysy mitä teen kysy mitä en minä juoksen palkka ei se katoaa hei hei |
full-time part-time
don't ask what I do, ask what I don't I’m running, my pay isn't it disappears, bye-bye |
|
jos ei jaksa kenelle voi kertoa sen
no siinä säästää voin jos laskui maksa en ja olla omalla lomalla tietenkin palkattomalla |
if you can’t take it anymore who can you tell
well you can save money if you don't pay the bills and be on my own vacation of course unpaid |
|
mutta tuskinpa illaksi kotiin ees joudan
kun duunien välillä huopaan ja soudan |
but I doubt I'll be home by evening
as I go back and forth between jobs |
|
elämä liukuu hihnalla
Valintatalon kassalla vuodet haihtuu savuna ilmaan tehtaan piipuista kerään tuopit salista ja katson kauas tauolla pilviä pihan röökipaikalla varjoja paratiisissa pilviä pihan röökipaikalla varjoja paratiisissa |

at the checkout counter of Valintatalo the years vanish like smoke rising from the factory chimneys I collect the pints from the hall and I look far away during a break clouds in the courtyard's smoking area shadows in paradise clouds in the courtyard's smoking area shadows in paradise |
|
taas ylitöissä huokaukset haihtuvat
kun lennosta vaalilupaukset vaihtuvat |
working overtime again, sighs vanish
while election promises change on the fly |
|
elämä liukuu hihnalla
Valintatalon kassalla vuodet haihtuu savuna ilmaan tehtaan piipuista kerään tuopit salista ja katson kauas tauolla pilviä pihan röökipaikalla varjoja paratiisissa |

Notes
Context
In two posts on the Maustetytöt Instagram account, the day before and of the song's release, band members Kaisa and Anna Karjalainen each discussed its origins. They said it was made at the request of the service trade union PAM to address the problems with involuntarily part-time jobs.
Kasia wrote (translated):
Anna and I have both done part-time jobs of our own will, Anna for example. in elderly and children care and both in restaurants. Our last workplace before a hundred gigs in 2019 made it impossible and unnecessary was the vegetarian restaurant Silvoplee in Hakaniemi in Helsinki. There, among other things, I baked raw cakes. Sometimes I miss those days.
Anna wrote (translated):
First came band practice and gigs and after that part-time jobs were arranged into the schedules... For me, these experiences were very useful, because as a shy girl, I gained a lot of confidence and courage when I was forced to meet different people in different situations. Had to study and learn some social skills. I also understood how hard such a job can be, both physically and mentally
“Piltti”
A Finnish baby food brand.
“cut with the family silver”

Likely allusion to benefit cuts by the right-leaning Finnish coalition government in office from summer 2023 and at the time this song was released in autumn 2026. The government includes the right-of-center National Coalition Party and further right Finns Party (formerly True Finns). In March 2024, Finns Party leader and deputy prime minister Riikka Purra appeared in a controversial photo holding up a pair of scissors with several other members of the Finnish parliament from her party arrayed behind her. The scissors were among a series of physical objects Purra used contemporaneously to emphasize her support for budget cuts. A member of her party shared the photo to Instagram. "Family silver" may be an allusion to the National Coalition Party's reputation as a party for well-off people. Thanks lilli m for decoding this.
“Valintatalo”
A longtime Finnish grocery store chain, absorbed into the conglomerate Kesko, which discontinued the brand in 2017.
Valintatalo is linked to another apparent reference in the song, Shadows in Paradise. In the Aki Kaurismäki film of that name, protagonist Ilona works at Valintatalo at the checkout.
Thank you lilli m for clarifying this reference.
“shadows in paradise”

The title (in both English and Finnish) of a 1986 film by Aki Kaurismäki, arguably his best, and often described as part of his "Proletarian Trilogy" because of its attention to issues of class and workplace injustice.
Maustetytöt appeared in, and gained international prominence from, the director's 2023 film Fallen Leaves, which is like Shadows in Paradise in that it's a working-class romance whose protagonists are tortured by overbearing and tyrannical bosses, who fall in and out of love, and who reunite in time to bring the film in for a happy landing.
In Shadows in Paradise, garbage truck driver Nikander, played by the late Finnish actor and musician Matti Pellonpää, falls for supermarket check-out girl Ilona, played by the superlative Kati Outinen. Ilona is fired from the supermarket with no severance to open a workslot for the boss' teenaged daughter, losing her apartment in the process. At her next job she is romantically pursued by her boss. Nikander, meanwhile, loses an opportunity to co-found his own sanitation business.

“go back and forth”
Literally, to row backward and forward, reversing the usual order of a common Finnish idiom for changing direction without making progress.
