For young writers, workaholics, the unemployed and former NaNoWriMo crews:

Po Bronson: The best advice to me was, don't just try to write something that's good enough to be published. Attempt to write something that's distinctive and unusual, such that it has to be published. We tend to emulate, often, the low branches on the tree when we should be emulating the highest branches, and we'll learn more from the experience and it'll stretch our voices.

I hate to link to the Examiner, but it is worth the read. I also like what he says about money and postponing your dreams.
