Fantastic story on a fantastic San Franciscan in -- wait for it -- the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Millionaire John Gilmore stays close to home while making a point about privacy

I searched the Chronicle archive back to 2000, and the only mention I could find of Gilmore was this story on the EFF, which is comparatively pedestrian.
